NY City’s Department of Health and Hygiene surveyed over 11,000 customers in 2007 and then again in 2008 at 13 fast-food chains. They found the people consumer fewer calories (106 less, to be exact) if they check the calorie count before ordering. Hats off to the city for passing a labeling law that requires fast-food restaurants to post calorie counts of menu items. The calorie difference was even bigger at burger joints.
So how do you put this into action for the benefit of you and your family?
1. Pay attention to posted calories counts. If they aren’t posted, ASK for a brochure or check online before you go.
2. Read food labels in grocery stores and chances are you will make healthier decisions.
3. Bone up and learn how to read the labels at the FDA site on labeling nutrition
