Ok, well maybe not exactly…although I do often find other “pearls of wisdom” and humor in the FeMail Creations catalog (www.femailcreations.com ) . Here are a couple more of my favorites:
“I only have a kitchen because it came with the house!” (That one resonates with me!)
“The time to be happy is now.”
“Some days are not even worth chewing through the restraints!”
“You have everything you need to be everything you want.”
“Unattended children will be given an espresso and a puppy!”
“Where there is great love, there are great miracles.”
“If you stumble, make it part of your dance.”
But back to the subject at hand…I came across a CCN article about why some women stay well. For everyone who appreciates “Cliff-Note” versions, it boils down to these 7 things:
1.) Get a massage. (I got one last night…mmmmmmm…even better than chocolate!)
2.) Take a cold shower. (OK, I tried the whole 10 minutes thing and it was a tad too long –and cold–for me but I was able to do the 2 minutes at the END of my shower and hope it reaps similar benefits!)
3.) Treat your GI problems “gingerly”.
4.) Lather up…a lot. (See last week’s post!)
5.) Try a cold-blasting cocktail. (I was hoping this was where the wine came in…)
6.) Eat more garlic.
7.) Stay positive.
Have a wonderful weekend. I know I will. My son becomes an “official” teen this weekend.
P.S. Good luck to my tri-chicas racing this weekend. JA, no more dark runs for you. T, see you next week.
And, to the most important man in my life….HAPPY BIRTHDAY, son! You make me proud. I love who you are and the man you are becoming.

That’s according to Men’s Health and the Abs Diet gang. It’s also the opinion was echoed by my CPT professor when I went back through training to get re-certified. And, it’s the opinion of many of our research institutes.
Seriously, the benefits (scientifically supported) are truly astounding. I’ve been taking fish oil for several years. I literally carry it with me in a small medicine vial in my purse and take it with each meal. To give you a quick education according to the editor’s in Men’s Health:
“There are three types: eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, and alpha-linolenic acid, known respectively as EPA, DHA, and ALA. EPA and DHA, the omega 3 fatty acids that are most easily used by your body, are found in significant amounts only in marine life, particularly cold-water fish (because they carry more fat for insulation). ALA, on the other hand, is obtained from plant-derived foods, such as flaxseed, canola oil, soybeans, pumpkin seeds, and walnuts. ” According to Bruce Holub, PhD., professor of nutritional sciences at U of Guelph, in Ontario, something to note is that “for ALA to provide any health benefits, your liver must convert it into EPA and DHA.”
What that means is with our ability to convert only 10-15%, we’d have to take in 6X the Omega 3’s from plant sources to equal 1 gram of Omega 3’s from fish. Things that make you go, “Hmmmm.”

But seriously, in this age of texting abbreviations, acronyms DO serve a useful purpose! Anyway, I came across one I really liked, so I thought I would share it with you. It’s called the “L-I-V-E” formula and it came from the Dawna Markova book, “I Will Not Die an Unlived Life–Reclaiming Purpose & Passion ” So, here it is:
L is for love…what do you LOVE to do? Make a list and then be sure to DO it.
I is for inner gifts…what are your natural talents? What do others come to you for? And back to “L”- what makes you happy? Go ahead, offer them to the world around you.
V is for values…what’s REALLY important? How do you want to make YOUR mark in the world? What is your legacy? What do you want to be remembered for?
E is for environment…we have such a grand opportunity to make a difference in our world and the world for our children. Don’t kid yourself. EVERY little bit matters. But the way to make the grandest impact is to surround yourself with those people, places, things, and conditions that bring out the BEST in YOU. It will help your career, your happiness and your impact on our wonderful world.
Go ahead and try it. Dare ya. L-I-V-E a little…or a lot! And don’t forget to laugh along the way.
Last week I took my kids to the island of Maui with a friend and his children. Making that trip is something I have wanted to do for several years now. I wanted to share the underwater world—it’s silence, beauty and awe, as well as the view from the top of the volcanic mountains—with my children. The trip was wonderful. I didn’t wear a watch.
Have you noticed the difference in the hurriedness of life in the city vs. the relaxed pace of a beach town? I notice it each time I go to Florida to visit my family. I enjoyed it again in Maui. I believe the beach folks have the right idea. While the beauty of the locale helps to remind them to stop, relax and reflect, I believe we can do the same anywhere…with practice and intention. Life is not meant to be rushed through. We can miss an awful lot if we don’t slow down. And truth be told, it’s much more enjoyable at a balanced pace. What is that saying? “Life is what happens when you are busy making plans.” I’m not saying we don’t need plans, but how about building in time for what’s really important? Time to take care of our bodies. Time for family –true attention to our loved ones. Time for meditation and prayer. Time to take in the beauty around us—even if it’s not in the light green crystal waters of Maui—there IS beauty. We just have to open our eyes, slow down, take in the sounds around us and experience life like a child. With wonder, amazement, and sheer enjoy. Try it! Aloha.

Awe Inspiring….and yes, a little shameless advertising while we were over there!
You know, try as I might, there are still days we are moving too fast. Now granted, it is usually due to the fact that we went too bed too late and didn’t get up as early as we should have…! Nonetheless, we still need something quick and easy AND healthy on our way out the door. Here’s a little something that is fast and good…AND healthy. It beats a refined-rich blueberry muffin and sugar coffee any day! (which, btw ladies, is 820 calories, 11 g protein, 35 grams of artery clogging / butt clinging FAT and 1 measly gram of fiber!) Try this and let me know what you think:
- 1 cup lowfat cottage cheese w/
- 1/2 fresh or frozen blueberries and 7 chopped almonds
(This little power mix provides 254 calories with 30 grams of protein, 7 grams of good fat, and 3 grams of fiber.) Sometimes I use Greek yogurt (so yummy and creamy) in place of the cottage cheese and throw in some Stevia and cinnamon, plus some whey protein and ground flax.
What about you? Got any on-the-go healthy snacks and meals you can share?

I don’t really call my goal setting process “New Year’s Resolutions”….I don’t know, I guess because it sounds so…temporary. Like the term “diet” which really isn’t temporary, but is often treated as such. Every year beginning around Thanksgiving and ending by mid January, I look back at the year. I say a lot of THANKS–truly– I am so blessed and SO glad I am still here (more on that later) . I also take an objective look at how I am spending time, how I would PREFER to be spending my time. Are my actions lining up with my life goals? And then, if not, what changes do I need to make?
Here are some of my goals for 2008: I want to get to bed sooner and finish the 3 books I am in the midst of reading. I want to increase my fruit and veggie intake from what has dropped to 5-6/day to a more regular 8-10. I want to slow down more with my kiddos and enjoy their precious personalities. I want to talk to my mom more. She lives in Florida and she’s just the most incredible woman I know. I miss having her closer. And I want to help anyone who is interested in getting healthier–whatever that entails. Training wise, I want to increase my 5k time. For years I have described myself as a “recreational” runner with slow twitch muscles. Well, if I want to be faster, I have to work at it. I’ve always enjoyed running because I didn’t push much. I pushed on the bike. I pushed at the gym. I didn’t push it on the pavement. This year, I plan to amp it up. I want to place top 3 in my triathlons (my age division, of course!).
For some reason, health changes can often seem daunting. But you’re not in this alone. There is an entire cyber world of sisters (and brothers) interested in helping you make the changes you want to make. So, right here, right now, DECIDE to change. Get healthier. Take small steps. And partner up, if possible. And remember, EVERY little bit helps. It truly does!
What are YOUR goals? Lose weight? Run a 5K or marathon? Eat healthier? Get your partner to eat healthier? And what cyber tools and websites have you found that are helpful?
