My mother returned back to Florida today. Her job was done. This time around. She always told me, “A mother’s job is never really done…” And once again, she’s right. My mother, the woman who taught me about being independent was independent far before it was cool or kosher to be so as a woman. Do you think she cared? Nah. Not one bit. Because she marched to her own beat, according to her values and let the world know what she thought along the way. You’ve got to admire that. Especially since she is now 76 so that means she was waaaaaaaaaay ahead of her time! My mother always wanted to finish school, so she went back to school in her 40’s and obtained a degree in nursing. She had stopped college years earlier when my father was sent to war in order to stay home and raise my brother. But once all of the kids were older, she went back to college, got her degree and worked at a local hospital for about 15 years. Of course, I am sure she never thought that she would end up using her nursing background to take care of my father during his tough battle with pancreatic cancer later in life. Nor did she expect to use it again to care for her youngest daughter during her leukemia battle (8 years remission this past May) or this past week when I needed to have surgery. I am so thankful to have her as my mother. I am so thankful for her love and guidance and advice (most of the time) over the years. And, while Mother’s Day has passed, I want to pay tribute to my mother, today. Mom, I love you. THANK you. You are the wind beneath my wings. The saying goes, “God gave me wings so that I could soar, but mom, you taught me how to fly.”

Do you know what’s best for you? It’s an onoing educational process as far as I am concerned! Each of us are different–we get various amounts of sleep, our diets vary, and we are exposed to different toxins, and our physical endeavors vary. I can tell you what I do–but for what’s best for YOU, is based on YOUR needs. And for that, you need an individualized plan. I have great homeopath and nutritionist friends who provide excellent guidance and direction. However, I still read and research everything I can get my hands on! For Christmas, I bought myself “You, the Owner’s Manual” ( Amazon ) by Dr. Oz, Oprah’s latest doctor friend. He came and spoke at Lifetime Fitness last year and the man is amazingly brilliant. Unfortunately, I have not let myself even peak at the book until I finish my current 3 open books! Anyway, Dr. Oz has a number of recommendations and some that are specific to your age which I found helpful ( Oprah’s Website ). You can download a PDF, which I thought was handy. There’s actually quite a few handy tools and healthy living articles from Dr. Oz at www.Oprah.com . So what’s best for you depends on you, your needs, and your nutritionist’s recommendations. If you have some other good reading recommendations, let me know. But –Dr. Oz’s book is NEXT in line and I can’t wait!

Toxic seems to be such a negative word. Yes, there are most certainly many “opportunities” for exposure to convenience food & lifestyle environments that pose a danger to our well being. And yes, there is aggressive marketing and misinformation out there to hawk so-called “nutritional” foods for profit at the expense of OUR health or environment. Not to mention the office “spread” opportunities, and great tasting (?), but cheap fast food. But I don’t think our future is bleak. And the world IS a beautiful place to be. I sincerely believe each one of us can make a difference….one change at a time, one person at a time, one day at a time….beginning with ourselves. Don’t we all want to lead healthy, happy lives? The way to do that is to follow a path that includes regular physical activity, good nutrition, preventive screenings, and EVERY day—make smart, healthy decisions. Did you know that a healthy lifestyle can easily add 10-20 years to a lifespan, not to mention dramatically improve the QUALITY? Sometimes the commitment seems too big. It’s really not. TRUST me. It’s about making small changes, daily choices, and a commitment to your goal. Small steps, ladies. And we’ll do it together. On this site, we can help each other with answers, suggestions, and provide synergistic encouragement. The sisterhood is strong. And the knowledge of ALL of us combined is POWERFUL. Join us. Be Strong. (Btw, I just love Lance’s “LIVEstrong” bracelet. Someone gave it to me when I was fighting leukemia and the mantra just resonated with me… Live Strong. Heck yeah. I will live strong, baby. I AM living strong. Every day.)  Life and health are such precious gifts. I am so thankful. Stay tuned, chicas….and stay STRONG!  Lisa
